New Iowa City Animal Care and Adoption Center
The City of Iowa City sought and received FEMA approval to build a new Animal Care and Adoption Center on Sand Road just South of the City of Iowa City Streets Division. The Friends of the Animal Center Foundation is looking forward to launching a capital campaign later this Summer!
Flood of 2008
In June 2008, flooding caused considerable disruption to the lives of families and their beloved animals in our area. The Animal Center and the building housing the FACF office were also flooded. The animals were evacuated to the Johnson County Fairgrounds, where staff and volunteers set up emergency animal intake for flood victims. They worked around the clock caring for Center animals and more animals from families forced to evacuate their homes.
Since the flood, the Animal Center has been at a temporary location at 4852 Sand Road.
A new location has been selected and vetted by the City, State and FEMA. It is South of the softball fields on South Gilbert Street. The official address will be 3910 Napoleon Lane. Neumann Monson Architects of Iowa City has been selected to perform the Architecture and Engineering Services for the Animal Center Project. Stay tuned!
